Days Gone Blue

Days Gone Blue
just like in the snow, remember the snow
we had boots to wear the hardy don’t scare
just like in the rain, remember the rain
didn’t we plant some seeds in amongst the weeds
the car broke down, the tears of a clown
the future lay ahead, loneliness was dead
in any kind of weather it was just like you to know what to do
till one fitful twister came spinning through and away you blew
away you blew, the days gone blue, all the days gone blue
just like in the sun, remember the sun
kids with no shirts kicking up the dirt
just like in the wind, remember the wind
breeze from the sea anointing you and me
the car broke down, the tears of a clown
the future lay ahead, loneliness was dead
in any kind of weather it was just like you to know what to do
till one fitful twister came spinning through and away you blew
away you blew, the days gone blue, all the days gone blue

Simple Things

|

Simple Things
the passing of the day, the setting of the sun
the tears along the way, two broken into one
the rising of the moon, the ebbing of the tide
the grief that fills the room when love gets cast aside
these are simple things, simple, simple, simple things
these are grackles at the bird bath flushing out their quivering wings
night has come again, it’s difficult to see
one and one and one, unraveling undone
night has come again, it’s come again for me
this doesn’t feel right, how long till morning light
the planets on the move, the budding signs of spring
the hips move to the groove promising better things
these are simple things, simple, simple, simple things
these are wolves up on the hillside sending up a howling
the morning of the day, the sun that reappears
the darkness gone away, the sky is getting clear
the sky goes clear
the clouds disappear
the sky goes clear
the sky goes clear

Monkey

Monkey
there’s a monkey inside of me, white mallets in his hands
he’s knocking rhythm up and down my spine, on my bones, marimba band
monkey flitting, flitting all around, spitting out monkey mind
he’s swinging from limb to limb, up in my tree all the time
I know he’s there, he does not care
he knows me well, he shares my cell
I know he’s there, he does not care
he knows me well, a living hell
there’s a monkey inside of me, white mallets in his hands
he’s beating rhythm up and down my spine, on my bones, marimba band
I know he’s there, he does not care
he knows me well, he shares my cell
I know he’s there, he does not care
he knows me well, he knows me too well

Imposter
I am an imposter
I was imposed upon, it’s not something you can see
I am an imposter
I’d just as soon forget the things got done to me
I’m an imposter, imposed upon
I am full up with trickery
been tricked by those I thought I knew
I am so full up with trickery
all of the lies told in the guise of what’s true
full up with trickery, been tricked
and I sing it out and I write it down still some things remain out of sight
and I spit bitter and I love strong and some days I get it right
I am just a fake
been faked out countless times
I am just a fake
they sure seemed like the trustworthy kind
I’m a fake, been faked out
and I sing it out and I write it down still some things remain out of sight
and I spit bitter and I love strong and some days I get it right
some days I get it right, most days I get it right

Can't Get Over

|

Can’t Get Over
we always were such good friends, our love was built on this
we saw each other through, first a smile and then a kiss
it always was enough when the going got rough
it always was enough when the going got tough
it made good sense to call her but her voice was not the same
I was hoping for connection not some cunning guessing game
the distance there between us was just about equal to the pain
the distance there between us was just about equal to the pain
I called the lover I can’t get over
to help me get over the lover I can’t get over
I called the lover I can’t get over
to help me get over the lover I can’t get over
it wasn’t such a good idea
what did I do to lose her what fabric did I rend
I got so downright angry and couldn’t accept the end
I’ve lost them both for sure now the lover and the friend
I’ve lost them both for sure now the lover and the friend

Enthusiastic

Enthusiastic
I’m really enthusiastic down deep, down there, somewhere
because I know that love is possible and the lotus flower still blooms
even in the muddy water
yes I believe that love is possible and it’s the best thing we do
and morons cannot rule this planet forever
after sin comes redemption
I think it’s time that they relent
and start relinquishing control before enthusiasm’s spent
after sin comes redemption
I think it’s time that they repent
and start relinquishing control before enthusiasm’s spent
I’m really enthusiastic down deep, down there, somewhere
because the baby is smiling and the cactus prevails
pushing up through the crust of snow pack
yes the baby is laughing and for now it is safe
and violence cannot rule this planet forever

Green Dress

Green Dress
I probably shouldn’t ask you but I’m going to anyway
please don’t wear the green dress that I bought you on that day
when you were celebrating and oh you looked so gay
please don’t wear that green dress anymore
you can give it to the Salvation Army
they’ll sell it for a pittance of what it’s worth
but some young damsel will wear it to a dance
and be so pleased as she sallies forth
please don’t wear the green dress that I bought you on that day
when our love was new and we had all the time in the world to play
to play at being lovers in our own sweet special way
please don’t wear the green dress that I bought you on that day
I don’t want to see you dancing slow with somebody else
his hands caressing your green clad back
so please do me a favor and just let that dress go
your closet’s full and you don’t need that
I probably shouldn’t ask you but I’m going to anyway
please don’t wear the green dress that I bought you on that day
unless your heart comes calling guess there’s nothing much left to say
and I won’t be buying you dresses anymore

Magic

Magic
the arm leads to the wrist, everything is in its place
the hand leads down to the fingers that lift to touch my face
the brain that sends the signal to the mouth which makes a shape
to the throat that starts to vibrate with the sounds of love you make
it’s magic, that’s all there is to it
it’s magic, magic all through it
it’s not the kind where you have to pick a card
it’s not like something huge appears in the back yard
it’s not the scarves, it’s not the doves, it’s not the rabbits pulled out of hats
it’s just the way you look when you look like that
your feet up on the dashboard your skirt slides to your thighs
the curve, the bone, the skin, the tone, can I believe my eyes
your breath it is a blessing, your heart beats like a drum
your attitude, no platitudes, you’re a gift to everyone
it’s magic, magic all through it

Trying

Trying
five pigeons on a rooftop, five fingers in the fist of the sun,
the snow is turning slushy and winter’s on a brief vacation.
Janey’s little doggie kissed the wheels of a Corvette,
there’s some talk about a traffic light, but it hasn’t happened yet
and there must have been four cruisers last night at the Lion’s Lair,
they bust them every six months, everybody knows what goes on in there
the window’s open when we’re sleeping with the stop slid over and tight,
we’re trying to learn how to love we’ve vowed to get it right,
the window’s open when we’re sleeping letting in a little night,
we’re trying to learn how to love we’ve vowed to practice till we get it right
the alley’s strewn with rubble, it’s all that stuff that was buried in the snow,
and Chrissie next door is pregnant, she can’t have that long to go,
and the teenage boys look dashing all in their hooded sweatshirt chic,
and we wonder if the car will pass inspection and if the violence has reached its peak
